Summer Quest is the Bucks County Free Library’s annual summer reading program that encourages families to earn badges by completing literacy–based challenges, and activities. The program motivates the community by rewarding participants with limited–edition badges that can only be obtained during the 6–week program, with each week featuring a different badge.

The program is made for the entire family and the design revolves around fun, summer, and exploration.

Each summer Bucks County Free Library releases six new seasonal badges for patrons to earn through a series of challenges. The badge themes are submitted by patrons and voted on by a panel of Children’s Services staff. Each badge is embroidered and can be ironed on to clothes, tote bags, and backpacks, hung or framed.

Programming Guides and Reading Logs

Programming materials were distributed to each participant at the beginning of Summer Quest. Programming guides promoted events, performances, and storytimes throughout the six-week program and listed which badge activities would be held each week.

Reading logs were created for each reading group: Preschool, Elementary, and Teens/Adults which allowed them to track how many days they read during the challenge and activities to earn badges.

Activity bags were given to participants who wanted to complete badge activities at home. The library provided all supplies for each activity for free each week. The large graphics allowed for staff and participants to easily identify which activity corresponded to each badge.

Activity Cards

Activity cards listed out the various activities participants could accomplish to earn their corresponding badge. Once participants completed any three activities, they could visit their local library branch and retrieve their badge.
